This lecture will explore best practices and procedures to control and minimize the transmission of infection. The presenter will look at disease transmission and infection prevention and how to break the chain of infection in the dental office. Other areas to be highlighted include periodontal disease and caries; pandemic diseases – Sars COVID-19 and variants; candidiasis, latex allergies, infection control and radiography; disinfection, sterilization and water line requirement. The lecturer will review standard precautions such as hand washing techniques, using PPEs and the disposal of infectious, chemical and hazardous waste. Participants will also learn about OSHA & CDC requirements including Blood Borne Standards.

Mark A. Edwards, DMD, is Dean of the Joint Colleges of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Oral Health and Public Health at the University of Technology, Jamaica having been appointed in 2019. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree with honours from Northeastern University, Boston Massachusetts (1980) and a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Hackensack New Jersey (1984).
Dr. Edwards has dedicated over thirty-five years of service to the field of Dentistry with significant contribution to research, academia, and related areas. Between 2000-2008 he worked in private practice and correctional facilities in Florida, USA and at various dental institutions in New York from 1984 to 1997. From 2000 -2019, Dr. Edwards was Coordinator for the Dental Hygiene Program at Northern Caribbean. He has served as a Lecturer in Radiology, Diagnostic Imaging & Jurisprudence and Director of Outreach Programmes, Clinical Supervision in the Faculty of Medical Sciences – Dental Department at The University of the West Indies, Mona.
Dr. Edwards has affiliations with several professional bodies including the Jamaica Dental Association, American Dental Association, the National Society of Dental Practitioners and the Florida Dental Association. As a member of the Jamaica Dental Association, he has served in several capacities including Vice President, a member of the Executive, Chairman of the Infection Control Committee, Continuing Education Coordinator and Insurance Guidelines Committee member. He served as the Registrar of the Dental Council of Jamaica from 1999 to 2011, and as a dental board examiner and a member of the examination board. Dr. Edwards is a member of Ministry of Health’s ENHRC COVID-19 National Research Committee in Jamaica.
